New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): In a major breakthrough in the infamous Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, US authorities have arrested Nehal Modi, the brother of fugitive diamond tycoon Nirav Modi. The arrest took place on July 4 following an extradition request submitted by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Nehal Modi faces two grave charges under Indian law: money laundering under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002, and criminal conspiracy along with destruction of evidence under Sections 120-B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Investigators allege Nehal played a key role in India’s largest banking scam by helping Nirav Modi transfer thousands of crores through shell companies overseas and attempting to destroy crucial documents linked to the fraud.

A US court has scheduled a status conference for July 17, 2025, to determine the course of Nehal’s extradition proceedings. While he is expected to apply for bail, American authorities have indicated they will oppose any bail plea. The Indian government is pushing for his swift extradition so he can face trial for his role in the multi-crore PNB scam.
