Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya’s Execution in Yemen Deferred, MEA Ensures Legal Support
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who was sentenced to death in Yemen, has received temporary relief as her execution has been deferred. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the Government of India is making every possible effort to help her.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India has arranged legal assistance and appointed a lawyer to support Nimisha Priya’s family. He added that the government is in constant touch with local authorities in Yemen and working with her family to find a mutually acceptable resolution. In recent days, efforts have been made to secure more time for discussions between her family and the victim’s family.
Jaiswal emphasized that the case is being closely monitored and India is even in contact with some friendly governments to explore further diplomatic options. He reassured that all possible support will continue.
Nimisha Priya has been in a Yemeni prison for the past eight years after being convicted of murder. Despite several diplomatic efforts by India, Yemen’s Supreme Court upheld the death sentence, and her execution was scheduled for July 16, 2025. However, after persistent legal appeals and negotiations, the execution has now been delayed. Earlier, the matter also reached the Supreme Court of India, where the Centre clarified that since the case falls under Yemeni law, India’s scope of intervention is limited.
