Nagpur(The Uttam Hindu): Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday indirectly commented on the ongoing tariff tensions with the United States, stating that some countries are able to “bully” others solely because they are economically and technologically strong.

Speaking at the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology in Nagpur, Gadkari stressed that if India aspires to become a ‘Vishwaguru’ (world leader), it must achieve self-reliance and strength in both technology and the economy.

“If we reduce imports and increase exports, we will never have to bow before anyone,” he said, adding, “The countries that dominate globally do so due to their economic might and technological superiority.”

Gadkari emphasised that India’s cultural ethos is rooted in ‘universal brotherhood’ and inclusivity. “Even if we become economically and technologically powerful, we will never pressurise others, because our tradition is based on the idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ — the world is one family,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of science, technology, and knowledge as keys to progress, he urged research institutions, IITs, and engineering colleges to focus on local needs in their research. “Every district and state has unique requirements — we must conduct research tailored to them,” Gadkari added.

He concluded by stating that if India adopts a technology and science-driven development model, the nation’s economic growth rate could potentially triple in the coming years.
