New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has indicated that Tehran is not willing to resume nuclear negotiations with the United States, despite repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that talks could soon begin. In an interview aired on Iranian state television, Araghchi said the door to nuclear talks with the US is closed, particularly after the US dropped 30,000-pound bombs on three nuclear facilities, a move he described as a grave mistake.

He claimed these airstrikes caused "serious damage" to Iran's nuclear infrastructure, leading Tehran to believe that diplomatic progress is no longer feasible under current conditions. “No agreement has been made, no timeline set, no promises given, and no conversations have been held about restarting talks,” Araghchi emphasized. His comments came shortly after President Trump stated that nuclear negotiations could resume by next week. Trump, who had unilaterally pulled the US out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, had recently expressed interest in forming a new agreement with Tehran.

Under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran agreed to limit its uranium enrichment activities in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. However, Araghchi said the US military strikes have made any new negotiation process “far more complex and difficult.” Meanwhile, during Friday prayers, Iranian clerics backed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling the recent war with Israel a victory for Iran. One influential cleric, Hamzeh Khalili, who also serves as Iran’s deputy chief justice, swore that the judiciary would pursue special trials for individuals accused of spying for Israel.

Amid the war, Iran executed several people previously held on espionage charges, raising fears among human rights groups of a possible wave of executions following the conflict. Authorities have reportedly detained dozens of individuals across multiple cities for alleged espionage on behalf of Israel. On June 13, Israel launched a major military offensive on Iran, targeting nuclear sites, defense systems, senior military officials, and nuclear scientists.

According to Israeli sources, over 30 Iranian commanders and 11 nuclear scientists were killed, while eight nuclear facilities and more than 720 military infrastructure sites were attacked during the 12-day operation. The Washington-based Human Rights Monitoring Group reported that over 1,000 people were killed, including at least 417 civilians.
