Bhubaneswar (The Uttam Hindu): Odisha, famous for its rich mineral resources, is now set to sparkle on India’s gold map. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has confirmed the presence of 10–20 tons of gold reserves across six districts of the state, marking one of the most significant discoveries in recent years.

According to the survey, massive deposits were found in Deogarh (Ads-Rampalli), Sundargarh, Nabarangpur, Kendujhar, Angul, and Koraput districts. State Mining Minister Vibhuti Bhushan Jena confirmed that the concentration of gold in these areas is economically viable for mining.

Following the discovery, the state government has swung into action. The Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) has already begun preparations for the auction of the Deogarh mines in collaboration with GSI. Meanwhile, exploration is also underway in Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, Sambalpur, and Boudh for potential reserves.

Experts believe this discovery could be a game-changer for Odisha, boosting state revenue and generating thousands of jobs for local youth. The government has assured that mining will be carried out under strict environmental guidelines and that the rehabilitation and welfare of local communities will remain a priority.

At the national level, this discovery holds immense importance. India imports 700–800 tons of gold annually, while domestic production is a mere 1.6 tons. Once production begins in Odisha, it could significantly reduce gold imports, saving billions in foreign exchange and strengthening India’s economy.
