Punjab Land Pooling Policy Withdrawn – Government’s Sudden Move Sparks Political and Farmers’ Victory Claims
Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu) – In a major policy reversal, the Punjab Government has withdrawn its controversial Land Pooling Policy, which had been facing mounting opposition from farmers and political rivals. The official withdrawal notice was issued by the Principal Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department, stating that the policy introduced on May 14, 2025, along with its amendments, stands revoked.
The policy had triggered widespread resentment among Punjab’s farming community, with farmer unions staging continuous protests. Opposition parties, especially the Shiromani Akali Dal, had been vocally critical, calling it anti-farmer and demanding its immediate rollback.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had earlier stayed the policy until further orders, adding to the government’s mounting pressure. Eventually, the Bhagwant Mann-led government decided to scrap it entirely.
Reacting to the decision, Shiromani Akali Dal’s Deputy Leader, Daljit Singh Cheema, took to X (formerly Twitter), calling it “a victory for the people of Punjab and the direct outcome of the Akali Dal’s sustained protests.”
Political analysts believe the move is a calculated step ahead of upcoming political battles, as the rollback is likely to pacify angry farmers while also addressing the court’s intervention.
