New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A terrifying scene has emerged from Russia’s Far East after a devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck beneath the sea near the remote Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday. The Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences released aerial footage showing massive tsunami waves engulfing the city of Severo-Kurilsk, highlighting the scale of destruction.

The powerful quake, considered one of the strongest ever recorded in the region, triggered tsunami waves up to 4 meters (12 feet) high across the Pacific Ocean, prompting evacuation alerts in Russia, Japan, China, New Zealand, and even coastal areas in the United States.

A chilling video posted on Russian social media shows buildings and streets in the port city of Severo-Kurilsk completely submerged in water. According to Russia’s Emergency Ministry, some parts of the city were flooded, but all 2,000 residents were safely evacuated. While injuries were reported, no critical casualties have been confirmed yet.

Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov urged residents to stay away from the coastline, warning that tsunami waves could still pose a threat. In a Telegram message, he emphasized the importance of following public announcements via loudspeakers. Locals described terrifying moments during the quake. “It was good we had a suitcase ready with water and clothes,” a resident from Elizovsky told government media. “We just grabbed it and ran. It was very scary.”
