Kamchatka (The Uttam Hindu): A powerful earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Friday. According to the German Research Center for Geosciences, the quake measured 7.1 magnitude at a depth of 10 kilometers. However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude of 7.4 at a depth of 39.5 kilometers. Despite variations in data, both agencies confirmed it as a strong and deep earthquake.

Following the tremor, the Pacific Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami alert, while China’s Tsunami Warning Center also flagged a local tsunami risk. China reported the quake at 10:37 AM Beijing time, with a magnitude of 7.1 at a depth of 15 kilometers. Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency clarified that no tsunami warning was issued for Japan.

This quake comes just weeks after the region was hit by a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in July, which triggered widespread tsunami alerts across the Pacific, including the US, Japan, Hawaii, Chile, and Costa Rica.

The Kamchatka Peninsula, part of the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, is highly prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Historically, the region has witnessed devastating quakes, including the 1952 9.0 magnitude earthquake, one of the strongest ever recorded, which caused catastrophic destruction and a massive tsunami. Authorities and international agencies are closely monitoring the situation and remain prepared for any emergency response.
