Russian drone strikes Ukrainian railway station, 30 killed in inferno
Kyiv (Ukraine): The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine took another horrific turn on Saturday when the Russian military launched a deadly drone strike targeting a railway station in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region, killing at least 30 people, including passengers and railway employees.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the incident as a "violent" attack. Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukraine's railway infrastructure since the war began in February 2022.
President Zelensky also posted a video after the attack, showing a train engulfed in flames. Shattered windows and pieces of metal convey the horror of the attack. Zelensky said, "So far we have information about 30 victims, including both passengers and railway staff. It is impossible for the Russians to be unaware that they are attacking civilians." The site of the attack is about 50 kilometers from the Russian border.
On Saturday, the Russian military bombed several areas of Ukraine overnight. A total of 109 drones and three ballistic missiles were used in the attacks. These attacks caused power outages to approximately 50,000 homes in the northern Chernigov region. The Ukrainian military claimed that 73 Russian drones were either shot down or diverted in retaliation.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has vowed to retaliate against Russia's attacks. Ukrainian forces claimed to have attacked a major oil refinery in Russia's northwestern Leningrad region on Saturday. Ukraine has said it will continue its long-range drone attacks on Russian energy sites.
