Supreme Court warns Election Commission—illegalities could nullify entire process
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court on Monday made a significant observation regarding the special summary revision (SSR) of voter lists in Bihar, stating that its verdict will not remain confined to Bihar but will extend to the entire country.
A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi warned the Election Commission that if any illegality is found in the process, the entire exercise may be scrapped. The court has fixed October 7 for the final hearing.
Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioners, alleged that the EC is not following its own rules and has failed to upload objections online as mandated by law.
This development carries wider implications as the EC recently announced plans to conduct similar voter list revision campaigns nationwide. The Supreme Court’s ruling could directly impact upcoming 2026 assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
