Tharoor Slams Trump: ‘No Mediation Possible Between Unequal Parties’ on India-Pak Conflict
New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): In a recent statement, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor took a strong stance against US President Donald Trump’s assertions about mediation between India and Pakistan. Tharoor made it clear that mediation isn’t feasible between two parties that aren’t on equal footing. He pointed out that a nation that harbors terrorism cannot be equated with one that is a victim of it.
Currently, Tharoor is leading a delegation of Indian MPs in the US to discuss ‘Operation Sindoor.’ He shared his thoughts during an event at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York when asked about Trump’s comments.
Tharoor remarked, “Mediation is a term we simply cannot accept. When you refer to a ‘broker,’ it suggests that both parties are equal — which they are not. One side is a country that supports terrorism, while the other is a robust democracy striving for peace.”
He continued, “There’s no equality between a neighbor intent on altering the geographical landscape of the last 75 years and a country that seeks to coexist peacefully. Thus, mediation between these two unequal parties is pointless.”
On May 10, Trump claimed on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a ceasefire, with the US playing a role in the discussions. He also mentioned that he told both nations that if they ceased hostilities, America would engage in trade with them.
In response, Tharoor stated, “We can only assume that the US has communicated with both sides. Our government has received high-level calls from the US and is aware of their concerns. It’s possible that discussions with Pakistan have had a significant influence.”
Tharoor emphasized that this was his personal opinion but believes “the responsibility to halt the process lies with the party that is the source of the issue.” With this statement, Shashi Tharoor reaffirmed India’s strong diplomatic position on the global stage, challenging the claims made by the US President.
