Tomorrow’s Blow to India: Trump’s 50% Import Tariff to Hit Farmers & Businesses
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The United States has formally announced a 50% tariff on Indian imports, escalating tensions between New Delhi and Washington. The US Department of Homeland Security issued a draft notice confirming that the tariff will apply to goods imported from India after 12:01 AM (EDT) on August 27, 2025.
The move follows US President Donald Trump’s earlier declaration to double the tariff from 25% to 50%, citing India’s continued oil purchases from Russia. American officials claim the measure is part of a wider strategy to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the Ukraine war.
India, however, has strongly objected to the decision. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday called the tariffs “unjustified,” stressing that India would not compromise on its energy security choices. He also pointed out the “double standards” of the West, highlighting that while China and European nations also buy Russian oil, only India is being targeted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a gathering in Ahmedabad, took a firm stand against US pressure, declaring that the interests of farmers, cattle rearers, and small businesses remain India’s top priority. Evoking the spirit of Lord Krishna and Mahatma Gandhi, Modi said India draws strength from both tradition and resilience, and will not bow to external pressure. The announcement has sparked concerns of a looming trade war between the two countries, with political analysts warning of economic ripples just months before India’s upcoming elections.
