Red Alert Chaos in Uttarakhand: Cloudburst Carnage, Kedarnath Yatra Halted, Schools Shut in 9 Districts
Dehradun (The Uttam Hindu): Uttarakhand is once again grappling with the fury of nature as incessant rains continue to lash several parts of the state. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in five districts — Dehradun, Nainital, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, and Bageshwar. In view of the deteriorating weather conditions, schools from classes 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centers have been ordered to remain closed in nine districts including Pauri, Almora, and Bageshwar as a precautionary measure.
Just a day earlier, a devastating cloudburst in the Dharali region of Uttarkashi caused massive destruction, leading to severe loss of life and property. Rescue and relief operations have been intensified by the Indian Army, using both air and ground forces to assist the affected population. In the midst of this weather crisis, the Kedarnath pilgrimage has been temporarily suspended after continuous rainfall and landslides blocked the motor route between Sonprayag and Gaurikund. According to Rudraprayag SP Akshay Pralhad Konde, the safety of pilgrims is paramount, and all visitors currently on the route have been safely accommodated at secure locations. Falling debris and stones have made the path between Gaurikund and Kedarnath unsafe for foot travel, prompting authorities to suspend all movement.
The Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers, which pass through the region, have swollen to dangerous levels, and the public has been strictly advised to stay away from the riverbanks. Police teams are on high alert across the region, ensuring round-the-clock monitoring. Meanwhile, landslides on the Badrinath national highway have disrupted travel for tourists, though administrative teams are working to restore road connectivity. A tourist stuck in the area praised the efforts of the local administration, saying that their swift response is helping to bring the situation under control.
With a red alert issued for the coming hours, authorities are urging people to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors. The situation remains tense, and state machinery is working at full capacity to minimize further damage and ensure public safety.
