Uttarkashi (The Uttam Hindu): A devastating cloudburst struck the high-altitude village of Dharali in Uttarkashi district on Tuesday, triggering a massive flood in the Khirganga River and causing widespread destruction. Over 20 houses, hotels, and homestays were swept away by the gushing water and debris. At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, while several others, including 10 army personnel, are reported missing.

A massive rescue operation is underway across Dharali, Harsil, and Sukkhi Top, where more than 130 people have been evacuated so far. Teams from the Indian Army, SDRF, NDRF, and local administration are involved in non-stop rescue and relief efforts. Colonel Harshvardhan of the 14th RajRif unit is personally leading a team of 150 soldiers in the mission. The State Control Room has been activated to closely monitor the situation.

Dharali, located about 20 km before the sacred Gangotri Dham, is a key stopover for the Char Dham Yatra. The flash flood has reduced multi-storey buildings to rubble, and nearly half the village is buried under slush and debris.

According to officials, the floodwaters split in two directions—towards Dharali and Sukkhi village, causing damage in both areas. Continuous rainfall across Uttarakhand has triggered landslides, further hampering rescue efforts. Even the Harsil Army Camp has suffered damage, and its helipad is now submerged.

Meanwhile, rail services between Haridwar and Dehradun have been disrupted after debris fell on the tracks near Bhimgauda Tunnel. For the first time, ADRF’s cadaver dog squad has been deployed to search for bodies, flown in from Delhi. Three ADRF teams, each with over 35 rescuers, have reached the site.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the tragedy, assuring full support to victims. He said, “My thoughts are with those affected by the Uttarkashi disaster. I have spoken with Chief Minister Dhami and ensured that all necessary help is being provided swiftly.” Home Minister Amit Shah also assured complete central assistance to the state.
