Vipin Bhati, Accused of Burning Wife Nikki Alive, Engages in Encounter with Police While Trying to Flee
Greater Noida (The Uttam Hindu): In Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, the police has encountered Vipin Bhati, the husband accused of burning his wife Nikki alive. Vipin Bhati had already been arrested. He was encountered while trying to escape from police custody on Sunday.
It is alleged that Vipin Bhati was trying to escape from custody by snatching the police's weapon. In this incident, an encounter took place near Sirsa intersection in Greater Noida, in which Vipin Bhati was shot in the leg. At present, he has been taken to the hospital for treatment. Nikki was married to Vipin Bhati, who lives in Kasna police station area of Greater Noida, in 2016. Recently, Nikki was allegedly beaten by her husband and in-laws and then burnt to death. Nikki's family alleges that her in-laws burnt her alive by pouring inflammable substance. Nikki was set on fire in front of her son. According to Additional DCP Sudhir Kumar, the police had received a memo from Fortis Hospital, stating that a girl had come in a severely burnt condition, from where she was being referred to Safdarjung Hospital. On this information, the police immediately reached the spot. However, Nikki had already died. The police took the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem.
Her elder sister Kanchan, who was also married into the same family, alleged that Nikki was killed because her family could not meet the in-laws' demand of Rs 36 lakh dowry. "We were constantly harassed. They kept saying that they did not get this or that during the marriage. They demanded Rs 36 lakh from our family," Kanchan alleged. She said she was also harassed and beaten for demanding dowry. Based on Kanchan's complaint, the police registered a case against Nikki's husband Vipin Bhati, brother-in-law Rohit Bhati, mother-in-law Daya and father-in-law Satveer. Two police teams were deployed to search for the remaining accused.
