Chaos in Mexico Senate: Lawmakers Trade Punches During National Anthem After Fiery Debate on Foreign Forces
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A shocking scene unfolded in Mexico’s Senate when a heated political debate spiraled into a physical brawl among lawmakers, right in the middle of the national anthem.
The live stream captured the chaos as senators abandoned their seats, hurling punches and shoving each other. The clash erupted after opposition leader Alejandro “Alito” Moreno of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) confronted Senate President Gerardo Fernández Noroña of the ruling Morena party.
According to reports, Moreno repeatedly shouted, “Let me speak!” and grabbed Noroña’s hand. In response, Noroña warned him, “Don’t touch me,” but the scuffle intensified. In the tussle, Moreno even knocked down a photographer.
The fight broke out following a heated debate on the presence of foreign armed forces in Mexico, an issue that has sharply divided the ruling and opposition parties.
Later, in a press conference, Noroña accused Moreno of pushing, harassing, and verbally abusing him. He also claimed Moreno threatened him, saying: “I will kill you.” Another senator was seen attempting to punch Noroña as he tried to retreat from the scene.
The violent outburst has drawn widespread criticism, with political analysts calling it an “embarrassing moment for Mexican democracy.”
