New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): A spell of heavy rain in the national capital on Thursday turned deadly in South Delhi’s Kalkaji area when a 100-year-old giant neem tree suddenly came crashing down on the road. The massive tree struck a moving bike and a car, killing a 55-year-old man on the spot and leaving a woman critically injured.

The victim, identified as Sudhir Kumar, was riding his motorcycle with a woman pillion rider when the tragedy struck. Chilling CCTV footage of the incident shows waterlogged streets and vehicles cautiously making their way through the rain, when — without warning — the towering tree collapsed, crushing the bike in a split second.

Panic gripped the area as locals rushed to the scene. Both the bike and a car parked nearby were trapped under the heavy trunk. Residents bravely pulled the injured woman out from the wreckage and rushed her to hospital. Extracting Sudhir Kumar’s body took significant effort due to the tree’s massive weight.

Police and disaster management teams arrived quickly, using a JCB machine to cut and remove the fallen tree. Authorities are now assessing the safety of other old trees in the vicinity to prevent such tragedies in the future.
