Gorakhpur (The Uttam Hindu): A prime example of why doctors are considered the second form of God has been seen in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) performed a rare and complex operation, giving a four-year-old a new lease on life by extracting a tooth from inside his nose. The child had been suffering from excruciating pain for the past six months and was also having trouble breathing. This is the first successful operation of its kind in Purvanchal.

A four-year-old boy from Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur, had been experiencing unbearable pain in his jaw and nose for the past six months. His worried family took him to several private hospitals, but his pain only worsened. Finally, they reached out to Dr. Shailesh Kumar, Assistant Professor and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in the Department of Dentistry at AIIMS.

When Dr. Shailesh conducted a detailed examination and scan of the child, he was astonished. The report revealed that one of the child's teeth had abnormally grown inside his nose and was also associated with a jaw cyst. This was an extremely rare and medically challenging condition.

Given the seriousness of the case, Dr. Shailesh informed AIIMS Executive Director and CEO, Major General (Retd.) Dr. Vibha Dutta. A specialist team was formed under the direct supervision of the Executive Director. The anesthesia department performed special preparations to anaesthetize the child, after which Dr. Shailesh Kumar and his team successfully completed this challenging, hours-long operation. The child is now completely healthy and has been placed in a special ward for observation.

Dr. Shailesh explained that an injury to the child's face about a year ago could be the likely cause of this problem. He urged parents to never take any injury to their child's face or jaw lightly and to immediately consult a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He added that if timely and proper treatment had been received, this operation might not have been necessary. Preparations are underway to publish this rare case in a prestigious medical journal. Previously, patients had to travel to major cities like Delhi or Lucknow for such complex cases.
