1 lakh people take to the streets in London, protest against illegal immigration
London (The Uttam Hindu): A massive protest called 'Unite the Kingdom' was held in the British capital London on Saturday in which more than 1 lakh people participated. This rally was organized against illegal immigration and it is considered to be the largest public demonstration of right-wing ideology till date. This movement was led by controversial anti-immigration leader Tommy Robinson.
1 lakh people took to the streets in London, protested against the issue of illegal immigrants; attacked policemen : The special thing about this demonstration was that Elon Musk, one of the richest people in the world and owner of Tesla and X (formerly Twitter) also joined it through video link. According to British media 'The Independent', while talking to Tommy Robinson, Musk said, "Violence is coming to you. Either fight or die." He also demanded the removal of the current government of Britain and dissolution of the Parliament. During the demonstration when there was tension and clashes on the streets of London, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was watching a football match with his son at the Emirates Stadium in London. The government is also being criticized for this.
The aim of the 'Unite the Kingdom' movement was to raise voice against illegal immigration in Britain. The protesters say that the immigrants entering the country illegally should be thrown out. According to statistics, so far this year more than 28,000 immigrants have reached Britain by boat across the English Channel, due to which concerns are increasing in the country.
On the same day, a protest group “Stand Up to Racism” also held a demonstration, which was attended by about 5,000 people. The group was raising its voice against racism and the politics of hate. Police set up security cordons in the entire area to prevent a clash between the two opposing ideologies.
According to the Metropolitan Police, during the 'Unite the Kingdom' march, some protesters tried to break the barricades erected by the police and started moving towards the opposing group. During this, several policemen were attacked. More than 1,600 policemen were deployed to control the situation, including 500 officers called from other areas.
The situation has been brought under control for now, but this demonstration is an indication of growing polarization and social discontent in Britain. The matter is being investigated by the administration and police and security arrangements are being reviewed.
