Massive 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks America’s Drake Passage, Tsunami Warning Issued
New York (The Uttam Hindu): A powerful earthquake struck America’s Drake Passage region on Friday morning, triggering panic and a tsunami warning. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake measured 7.4 on the Richter scale and occurred at 07:46 AM IST.
The epicenter was located at a depth of 36 kilometers, between South America and Antarctica, an area known for high seismic activity due to the junction of tectonic plates.
Initially, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake’s magnitude as 8.0, but later revised it to 7.4. Following the tremors, authorities issued a tsunami alert, though no major damage has been reported yet. Experts have also warned of possible aftershocks, urging residents and ships passing through the dangerous Drake Passage sea route to remain on high alert.
