Dhaka (The Uttam Hindu): Bangladesh has restricted SpiceJet from using its airspace due to pending air navigation charges. As a result, the airline has been compelled to reroute certain flights, which may lead to increased flying distance and higher fuel consumption.

According to sources, the impact is most visible on eastern routes, particularly flights operating between Kolkata, Guwahati, and Imphal. Flight tracking data indicates that aircraft on these sectors are now avoiding Bangladeshi airspace and taking longer alternate routes, potentially increasing fuel usage and operational costs.

Overflight permissions are crucial for airlines as they help optimise flight time and reduce fuel expenses. The restriction has come at a challenging time for SpiceJet, which is already facing financial stress. For the quarter ending December 2025, the airline reported a net loss of ₹269.27 crore, attributed to higher expenses and one-time costs.

A SpiceJet spokesperson stated that the airline is in discussions with Bangladeshi authorities regarding the outstanding charges. “We are in regular communication with the concerned authorities on navigation and other operational matters. This is a common industry issue. Our flight operations remain unaffected, and all services are operating as per schedule,” the spokesperson said.
