Dhaka (The Uttam Hindu): Amid the ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh, a major new development may be on the horizon. According to sources, the head of the country’s interim government, Mohammad Yunus, may soon resign from his position. Since the coup that ousted Sheikh Hasina's government, Bangladesh has not returned to stability, and Yunus's possible resignation could further aggravate the situation.

According to a media report, it has become extremely difficult for Mohammad Yunus to work effectively under the current circumstances. The lack of consensus among various political parties and the escalating political tensions are considered the main reasons behind his decision. The report also mentions emerging differences between Yunus and the chief of the Bangladesh army in recent days.

Nid Islam, leader of the National Citizen Party of Bangladesh, made a major revelation, stating that he had met with Yunus and confirmed the discussions about his resignation. Nid Islam said, “We have been hearing about his resignation, so I went to meet him to discuss the matter. He told me that he is seriously considering it. He feels that under the current conditions, he cannot fulfill his responsibilities.”

If Mohammad Yunus resigns, it would be another significant blow to Bangladesh’s political landscape. It would raise questions about the credibility of the interim government and could further complicate the process of upcoming elections. Currently, Bangladesh is going through a delicate phase, and Yunus’s next move could have an impact on the politics of the entire South Asian region.

Army Chief Issues Ultimatum

It is worth noting that just a day earlier, Bangladesh’s army chief, General Waqar-uz-Zaman, issued a stern warning to Mohammad Yunus, giving him an ultimatum to conduct elections by December. After the coup that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August last year and her subsequent escape to India, Mohammad Yunus was appointed as the head of the interim government.
