Canada (The Uttam Hindu) : An Indian national died when a commercial survey aircraft crashed in Newfoundland, Canada, the Indian Consulate General in Toronto said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to local media reports, a plane crashed near Deer Lake Airport in Newfoundland, Canada on the evening of July 26. The Indian Consulate General in Toronto said on Tuesday that an Indian citizen, Gautam Santosh, died in the accident. The Indian Embassy also expressed its condolences and assured all possible assistance to the family of the deceased. In a letter dated 'X', the Consulate General wrote, "We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family at this difficult time. The Consulate is in constant touch with the bereaved family and local authorities in Canada to provide all necessary assistance and cooperation."

Santosh, originally from Kerala, was employed by Delta, British Columbia-based Kisick Aerial Survey Inc., which operated the Piper PA-31 Navajo aircraft. Earlier, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that there were two people on board the plane at the time of the crash, and both were declared dead at the scene. Andrew Nesmith, owner of British Columbia-based company Kisick Geospatial and Aerial Survey, said after the accident, "We are shocked and heartbroken by this loss."

He further added, "Our deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased." The crashed plane was reportedly a 'Piper Navajo twin-engine aircraft' that can seat eight passengers at a time. However, it was reported that Nesmith refused to immediately release the names of anyone involved in the accident and said that information about this would only be given by the relevant authorities. An investigation was conducted by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB). After the accident, Nesmith said that the company would "provide assistance in every way possible."
