New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a move widely seen as an attempt to curry favour with former U.S. President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has gone out of his way to endorse Trump’s controversial and often disputed claims. On Tuesday, Carney lavished praise on Trump during a bilateral meeting at the White House, calling him “a leader who has initiated change across the world.”

During the talks, Carney said, “You (Trump) are a president who has sparked transformation globally.” He credited Trump for the revival of the U.S. economy, increased NATO defence spending, and even for initiatives aimed at restoring peace from India–Pakistan to Azerbaijan–Armenia. His remarks, however, raised eyebrows internationally, as many of Trump’s foreign policy claims have long been dismissed as exaggerated or false.

Attempt to Please Trump?

Carney’s flattering remarks come just months after Trump had threatened to impose extra tariffs on Canada and even made the outlandish suggestion of “merging Canada with the United States.” Despite that, this was Carney’s second visit to Washington since taking office in March, and many analysts believe his latest statements were an attempt to mend strained U.S.-Canada relations and align diplomatically with Trump’s renewed political clout.

India Rejects Trump’s Mediation Claim

This is not the first time Trump has claimed to have played a role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan. Earlier, he asserted that his administration had “helped broker peace” between the two nations — a statement India firmly denied. The Indian government made it clear that “there is no scope for third-party mediation” in matters between India and Pakistan.

Sources recall that following a major terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Indian forces had launched ‘Operation Sindoor’, destroying nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and eliminating over 100 militants. The operation, carried out independently by India, demonstrated New Delhi’s resolve to act firmly against terrorism — without any foreign involvement.

Carney’s endorsement of Trump’s disputed narrative has sparked debate in both Ottawa and Washington, with critics accusing the Canadian leader of political flattery at the expense of diplomatic credibility.
