US launches airstrike on Iran's Chabahar port, targets military facilities
This marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran, with Chabahar Port being a vital hub for Iran's trade with India and Central Asia
Tehran (The Uttam Hindu) : Following the attack on Kharg Island, the US has also targeted Iran's strategically important Chabahar Port. According to media reports, US fighter jets attacked military bases located in the trade zone of Chabahar Port. Following the attack, loud explosions were heard in the area and black smoke was seen rising into the sky, due to which heavy damage is feared.
According to international media reports, several military aircraft were seen hovering over the port area during the attack. Videos on social media also showed aircraft flying around the port. Previously, the US has also attacked Iran's Kharg Island, considered a major hub of the country's oil economy.
Chabahar is strategically important for India
Iran's Chabahar port is also considered very important for India. Through this port, India strengthens trade relations with West Asia, Afghanistan and Europe. The Indian government has been supporting the development of this project for the last several years. However, a political debate has also started regarding the lack of special provision for the Chabahar project in the recent budget. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has demanded on social media that the government should clarify whether India is still actively involved in this project. He says that if India withdraws from it, it could prove to be a big strategic setback for the country.
Tensions over the Strait of Hormuz have risen following US attacks, with Iran restricting navigation through parts of the Strait of Hormuz, raising global tensions. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said he has urged several countries to cooperate by sending warships to keep the sea route open.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered crucial to global oil supplies, as approximately 20 percent of the world's oil trade passes through it. Trump has stated that countries heavily dependent on West Asian oil should step forward to secure this route. Experts believe that further escalation of tensions in the region could have a direct impact on the global oil market and international trade.
