Cyclone Ditwa devastates Sri Lanka: National emergency declared; India steps in as rescuer, Jaishankar shares video

Colombo (The Uttam Hindu): Severe cyclone 'Ditwa' has caused massive devastation in Sri Lanka. Following this natural disaster, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared a state of emergency across the country on Friday night. According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), the death toll due to the cyclone, landslides and floods has risen to 153, while 191 people are still missing. In this difficult time, India, following its 'Neighbourhood First' policy, has extended a helping hand to Sri Lanka and launched 'Operation Sagar Bandhu'.

80 Hanumans and 21 tons of relief material sent from India

India took immediate action to deal with this disaster in the neighboring country. The Indian Air Force sent two military aircraft—a C-130 and an IL-76—from Hindon Air Base to Colombo. These aircraft carried approximately 21 tons of relief material, over 80 brave NDRF commandos, and 8 tons of rescue equipment to Sri Lanka.

Indian soldiers have become "Lord Hanuman" for those stranded in Sri Lanka. NDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations using helicopters and boats. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared a video of the Indian soldiers, in which they can be seen saving flood victims in difficult conditions. The soldiers' bravery is being widely praised.

More than 7 lakh people affected

DMC report and current situation According to the report of Disaster Management Centre (DMC), the impact of this massive disaster has been felt widely in 25 districts of Sri Lanka, affecting around 7,74,724 people from 2,17,263 families. To help the homeless people in this hour of crisis, 798 relief camps have been set up across the country, where more than one lakh people are currently taking shelter. Talking about the latest situation, although the water level is now gradually decreasing, but the authorities have issued a warning that the indirect effects of the cyclone may still remain, hence the danger is not completely averted.

India Stands Strongly Together

The Indian Air Force announced on social media that rations and essential supplies were delivered to communities in need under "Operation Sagar Bandhu." India has clarified that it stands firmly with Sri Lanka during this time of crisis and that relief supplies are being continuously sent.
