Global South at G7: Modi's visit to Canada for G7 Summit...know what will be special!
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Canada to attend the 51st G-7 Summit being held in Kanakaskis, Alberta on June 16–17. PM Modi landed in Calgary and is expected to reach Kanakaskis soon. This marks his sixth consecutive participation in the prestigious summit, which includes heads of France, the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Japan and Italy. Modi is attending the summit on the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The summit began with high-level discussions on global issues; however, U.S. President Donald Trump departed midway, which means there will be no bilateral meeting between Trump and Modi. Trump’s sudden exit was confirmed by White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, citing urgent national matters. Despite this, India’s participation holds strategic significance, particularly in the context of reshaping global narratives around energy, technology, and security.
This is PM Modi’s first visit to Canada since the 2023 diplomatic fallout following the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Puri outside a Canadian gurdwara. Allegations of Indian agent involvement had severely strained ties between New Delhi and Ottawa. Under former PM Justin Trudeau, relations had deteriorated further, but the current visit is being seen as a potential step toward normalizing ties.
