Historic Moment! Azerbaijan, Armenia End 35-Year Enmity with Peace Deal, Trump Attends
New Delhi/Washington (The Uttam Hindu): Azerbaijan and Armenia on Friday signed a historic peace agreement under the mediation of the US. The agreement was signed in the presence of US President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington.
35 years old enmity between Azerbaijan-Armenia ended, peace treaty signed in presence of Trump : The agreement aims not only to end the decades-old conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, but also to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries and promote economic cooperation. It is being considered a major diplomatic success of the Trump administration, which is sure to impact the role of Russia, which considers this region to be in its sphere of influence.
“We fought for 35 years, now we are friends… and we will remain friends for a long time,” President Trump said at the ceremony, which was attended by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Armenia Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict began in the late 1980s, when the region came under the control of ethnic Armenians backed by Armenia, despite being part of Azerbaijan. In 2023, Azerbaijan regained full control after military action, forcing about 100,000 ethnic Armenians to leave the region and move to Armenia.
Under the agreement, the two countries have committed to end the conflict, respect each other's territorial integrity and establish diplomatic relations. It also gives the US exclusive rights to develop a strategic transit corridor in the South Caucasus, which is expected to boost energy and resource exports.
After the agreement, both leaders thanked President Trump and announced their nomination of him for the Nobel Peace Prize. President Aliyev said, "If not President Trump, then who should get the Nobel Peace Prize?"
