Trump’s tariff push brings India and Europe closer ahead of EU-India summit
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Amid threats of tariff increases from the United States, India and the European Union (EU) appear to be drawing closer. Days before her visit to India, Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, spoke of a significant shift in the relationship between the two strategic partners.
Addressing the European Parliament on Wednesday, January 21st, Kaja Kallas stated that the world has become more dangerous than ever before, and that working together between India and the EU would be beneficial for both. She indicated that the EU's top leadership could be the chief guest in India on Republic Day 2026. Following the January 26th celebrations, the 16th EU-India Summit is expected to be held, where several important agreements could be signed.
Kaja Kallas said that India is becoming increasingly important to Europe's economic strength. She explained that the EU is ready to work with New Delhi on a new and powerful agenda to strengthen trade, security, technology, and people-to-people ties.
He said that at a time when the rules-based international order is under strain due to wars, pressure and economic divisions, it is crucial for India and the EU to draw closer to each other. "In today's times, two major democracies cannot afford to show any hesitation," Kallas said. "We have a responsibility to strengthen international law, the UN Charter and an effective multilateral system for the 21st century."
Three major agreements are expected between India and the European Union. These include issues related to trade, security, and people-to-people movement. Negotiations on the EU-India trade agreement are expected to conclude on January 27th. According to Kaja Kallas, this deal will open markets, remove trade barriers, and strengthen supply chains in key sectors such as clean technology, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors.
Additionally, a Security and Defense Partnership Agreement is expected to be signed between the EU and India. This agreement will enhance cooperation in the areas of maritime security, counter-terrorism activities, and cybersecurity. Negotiations on an information security agreement will also commence. The two sides are also preparing to finalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) within a broader framework for cooperation on mobility to facilitate the movement of workers, students, researchers, and highly skilled professionals.
