India will now face 75% tariffs instead of 50%, Trump threatens countries worldwide over trade with Iran
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will impose a 25 percent tariff on countries that continue to trade with Iran. The move is aimed at increasing pressure on Iran’s leadership amid rising violent protests in the country.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that the tariff would take immediate effect and would apply to all business conducted with the United States by countries maintaining commercial ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran. He said the decision was final, warning that it could seriously damage America’s major global trade relationships.
Iran maintains trade relations not only with neighboring nations but also with major economies such as India, Turkey, China, and the UAE. The United States has already imposed a 50 percent tariff on India, and if the new measure is implemented, the total tariff on Indian goods could rise to 75 percent.
In his post, Trump wrote that any country doing business with Iran would have to pay a 25 percent tariff on all trade with the US, effective immediately. However, he did not clarify how the policy would be enforced, which countries would be directly affected, or whether there would be any exemptions for humanitarian or strategic trade.
The US President also said his administration was in talks to hold discussions with Tehran but warned that immediate action might be necessary due to the increasing death toll and continued arrests of protesters by the Iranian government. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said that Iran had reached out and expressed its willingness to talk.
