Israel to honour Trump with Peace Award, first time in 80 years a non-Israeli will receive the honour
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Israel has announced that former US President Donald Trump will be honoured with its prestigious Peace Award. The announcement was made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after his meeting with Trump in Florida. This will mark the first time in 80 years that the award is being conferred on a non-Israeli citizen.
The announcement was made during a joint press briefing following bilateral talks held at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Trump appeared visibly pleased and said he had not expected such an honour.
Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that President Trump had broken several long-standing traditions by taking bold and unexpected decisions that surprised the world. In the same spirit, Israel has also decided to begin a new tradition. He noted that an award which had never been given to a non-Israeli in the past eight decades will now be presented to Trump. Netanyahu also mentioned that Israel’s education minister had announced the decision during a luncheon meeting.
Reacting to the announcement, Trump said the gesture was truly surprising and deeply appreciated. Speculation is now growing that Trump may attend Israel’s Independence Day celebrations, where the award could be formally presented.
Rules changed in July
The Israel Peace Award is considered the country’s highest civilian honour and is given for exceptional contributions in the fields of peace, science and the arts. Until recently, the award was reserved exclusively for Israeli citizens. However, in July 2025, the rules were amended to allow foreign nationals to be honoured as well.
