Japan shaken: 6.7-magnitude quake sparks tsunami warning
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Another strong earthquake has struck Japan. A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Japan at 5:03 pm on Sunday evening. A tsunami alert has been issued for Iwate Prefecture.
According to Japanese media, a tsunami warning was issued in Iwate after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the coast on Sunday evening. According to information shared by Japanese media, 2,825 houses in coastal areas of Ofunato city in Iwate prefecture have been ordered to be evacuated. Along with this, instructions have been issued to 6,138 people living in these houses to move to safer places. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a 10 cm tsunami was observed at Ofunato port in Iwate at 5:39 pm. A weaker tsunami was observed 70 km off the coast of Iwate at 5:12 pm.
A tsunami warning in Japan predicts waves of up to 1 meter. The earthquake measured 4 magnitude in Morioka city and Yahaba town in Iwate, as well as Wakuya town in neighboring Miyagi Prefecture. A statement issued by East Japan Railway said that Tohoku Shinkansen will be without power for some time. Due to this, operations between Sendai and Shin-Aomori stations have been suspended. Earlier, on October 5, an earthquake was felt in Japan. Its intensity was measured at 6.0 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was at a depth of 50 kilometers inside the earth.
