Major tragedy during New Year celebrations in Switzerland, blast at ski resort bar; at least 10 feared dead

Crans-Montana (The Uttam Hindu): While people across the world were welcoming the New Year with celebrations, the occasion turned tragic in Switzerland. A major incident was reported on Thursday in the famous luxury alpine ski resort town of Crans-Montana, where a powerful explosion at a bar is feared to have killed at least 10 people.

According to Gaetan Lathion, spokesperson of the Valais police in southwestern Switzerland, the explosion occurred around 1:30 am on Thursday. The blast took place at a bar named “Le Constellation,” which is popular among tourists. At the time of the incident, a large number of people were present inside the bar celebrating New Year, when the sudden explosion caused widespread destruction.

Speaking to AFP, the police spokesperson said the explosion occurred due to unknown reasons. Several people were injured in the incident, and reports indicate that at least 10 people may have lost their lives. Images published by Swiss media show flames engulfing parts of the building where the explosion occurred.

A large number of emergency vehicles, ambulances, and police personnel were rushed to the spot. Rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing, and efforts are underway to pull out people trapped under the debris. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
