“Millions Could Be at Risk”: Japan Issues Warning of Possible Megaquake Above Magnitude 8
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Japan was shaken once again on Tuesday as a strong earthquake caused fresh destruction. A 7.5-magnitude quake struck off the eastern coast of Aomori, south of Hokkaido, damaging several locations. At least 34 people sustained minor injuries, and some roads and buildings suffered limited structural loss.
However, what is even more alarming is that the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a rare warning for a potential megaquake. According to reports, JMA has stated that the coming week is extremely sensitive and a powerful earthquake of magnitude 8 or higher could occur. This alert is not based on a forecast but on the heightened seismic activity currently observed.
Why Has Northern Japan Become High-Risk?
Experts say Monday’s 7.5-magnitude quake occurred in the same region where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath Japan. The area around the Japan Trench and the Chishima Trench has been the epicenter of several major historical earthquakes. The devastating 2011 tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear disaster were also triggered by seismic movement in this zone.
JMA further pointed out that a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit the region just two days before the massive 9.0 quake in 2011, a pattern similar to this week’s activity.
How Severe Could the Potential Disaster Be?
Government estimates warn that if another offshore megaquake strikes this region, it could result in:
Tsunami waves rising up to 30 meters (98 feet)
More than 199,000 possible deaths
Over 220,000 buildings destroyed
Economic losses of about 31 trillion yen (198 billion USD)
Up to 42,000 people suffering hypothermia if the disaster occurs in winter
Which Areas Are Under Alert?
The wide-ranging advisory has been issued for 182 municipalities from Hokkaido to Chiba Prefecture. This is considered one of the largest and most detailed regional alerts in recent years. Last year, a “Nankai Trough” megaquake warning in southern Japan had created confusion due to its vague scope. This time, JMA has shared clear and cautious information to ensure citizens stay prepared rather than panicked.
Authorities Have Urged People To:
Keep emergency kits ready
Stay alert in coastal areas
Follow evacuation orders immediately if necessary
After the 2011 tragedy, the purpose of this warning is to prepare citizens mentally and practically for the worst possible scenario.
