Washington (The Uttam Hindu): The countdown to welcome the New Year 2026 has begun across the world, and tourists are arriving at their favorite destinations to celebrate. But this time, amidst the excitement, there is also an atmosphere of fear. In view of terrorist threats, recent violent incidents, and the risks associated with crowds, major New Year's Eve events in many major cities around the world have either been canceled or strict security arrangements have been made. According to reports in The Mirror US and Fox News, these decisions have been taken as a precautionary measure to avoid any major attack or accident.

A major tragedy was averted in the US due to the alertness of security agencies. Federal authorities have foiled a horrific plot to bomb Los Angeles on New Year's Day. The FBI took action and arrested four suspects while rehearsing for an attack in the Mojave Desert. Investigations have revealed that these suspects were planning to carry out simultaneous attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at several locations in Los Angeles. Although celebrations have not been cancelled in Los Angeles, security has been tightened. Meanwhile, police presence has been increased in New York's Times Square, where one million people are expected to gather for the famous "Ball Drop" event.

Strict measures are being taken in Europe and Asia too for security reasons. In the French capital Paris, on the request of the police, the administration has cancelled the famous concert to be held on the Champs-Elysees. Officials feared that the huge crowd could cause a stampede or security lapse. Although there will be fireworks there, recorded music will be played instead of live performances. Similarly, in Tokyo, Japan, the 'Countdown' to be held in Shibuya has been cancelled due to the crowd and the threat of possible attacks. Shibuya Mayor Ken Hasebe has clarified that the administration's entire focus is on preventing accidents and chaos.

New Year's celebrations in Sydney, Australia, will also be subdued this year. Following the deadly terrorist attack on Sydney's Bondi Beach earlier this month, all New Year's events have been cancelled. Waverley Council described this as a step taken for security and to show solidarity with the Jewish community. Furthermore, Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, has also confirmed the cancellation of its official celebrations. Officials say that given the current situation, no organized public events will be held this year. The administration has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution in crowded areas.
