Notorious drug mafia ‘El Mencho’ killed in Mexico, violence erupts; India issues advisory
Washington (The Uttam Hindu): Mexican security forces have killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” one of the most powerful and feared drug lords in the country. Following the operation, violent protests and unrest broke out in several states. US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau confirmed the development, stating that Mexican forces had eliminated “El Mencho.” In a post on X, he described it as a major development for Mexico, the United States, Latin America, and the world, adding that good people are stronger than criminals. In a separate message, he expressed concern over the violence in Mexico, saying that such reactions from criminal groups were not surprising but should not weaken resolve.
The US State Department released emergency contact numbers for American citizens. Calls from the US and Canada can be made to 1-888-407-4747, while those calling from Mexico or other countries can dial +1-202-501-4444. India has also issued an advisory for its citizens in view of the situation in Mexico.
According to reports, the Mexican military carried out the operation that resulted in Oseguera’s death, marking a significant blow to organized crime. The action has intensified the government’s fight against cartels, triggering violent reactions from gang members. Areas controlled by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel witnessed unrest, including incidents of vehicles being set on fire and highways being blocked in cities such as Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. Reports also indicated clashes between suspected cartel members and security forces, with buses and shops set ablaze in some regions.
Oseguera was the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, also known as CJNG. US authorities had previously announced a reward of up to 15 million dollars for information leading to his capture. He faced drug trafficking charges in the United States and was considered a key figure in the flow of fentanyl and methamphetamine into the country.
The operation comes amid continued pressure from Washington on Mexico to intensify action against drug trafficking networks. In recent months, the US administration has urged stronger measures against cartels, while Mexican leaders have rejected any direct US military intervention.
