Pak govt yields to Imran Khan’s sisters; protests outside jail force meeting permission
Islamabad (The Uttam Hindu): Pakistan’s political scene witnessed major unrest on Tuesday as tensions rose over former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health and security while he remains in Adiala Jail. Amid growing speculation and intense protests, the administration has finally granted permission for one of Imran Khan’s sisters to meet him inside the prison.
Reports say that Imran Khan’s three sisters and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi had been camping outside Adiala Jail for several days, waiting for approval to visit him. On Tuesday, when one of his sisters was allowed inside, the situation outside turned more chaotic as PTI supporters and security personnel clashed. The remaining sisters continue to stay outside the jail.
PTI workers have expressed deep anger and concern over Imran Khan’s condition. The party had earlier announced fresh protests outside the Islamabad High Court and Adiala Jail. As a result, large numbers of supporters gathered on the streets of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
With tensions escalating, the Pakistani administration took strict measures. Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hasan Waqar Cheema imposed Section 144 across the city under the Punjab Amendment Act 2024.
Under this order, gatherings of five or more people, rallies, protests, demonstrations, or any public assembly have been completely prohibited. Despite the restrictions, uncertainty about Imran Khan’s health and the anger among supporters continue to grow.
