Pakistani PM Warns India Over Indus Waters: ‘Not a Drop Will Be Snatched… We’ll Teach a Lesson for Life’
Islamabad(The Uttam Hindu): In a fiery statement, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a stern warning to India over the Indus Water Treaty. Speaking at an event in Islamabad, Sharif declared that "the enemy cannot snatch even a drop of water from Pakistan", adding that if India tries to stop the flow of water, Pakistan will respond in a way that will be remembered for a lifetime.
Calling water Pakistan’s “lifeline”, Sharif emphasized that the Indus Water Treaty is an international agreement and Islamabad will not compromise on its water rights.
This comes just days after former Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto threatened war if India suspends the treaty. Addressing a rally in Sindh, Bhutto claimed that Modi government’s actions have caused huge losses to Pakistan, and warned that the Pakistani people are capable of fighting to reclaim all six rivers.
Earlier, Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir had also threatened that if India builds a dam on the Indus, it would be destroyed with ten missiles.
The Indus Water Treaty, signed in 1960 with World Bank mediation, grants India control over the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) and Pakistan control over the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab). In recent years, India has hinted at reviewing the treaty due to Pakistan’s continued support for terrorism.
