Providence (The Uttam Hindu): Panic gripped Brown University in the United States when a shooter opened fire on campus during final exams. At least two people were killed and nine others injured. The incident has left the university in a state of panic, and police are searching for the suspect.


Gunfire erupts on Brown University campus, leaving two dead and nine injured: According to University President Christina Paxson, all those injured in the shooting were students. The shooting occurred Saturday afternoon in the engineering building. Providence Police Deputy Chief Timothy O'Hara said the suspect was a male, wearing dark clothing and a mask, who was last seen leaving the engineering building. He is believed to be around 30 years old. Officials estimate the shooter used a handgun.


Mayor Brett Smiley said a shelter-in-place order was imposed following the incident, and a thorough search of the campus and surrounding areas was underway. One person was initially detained but later found innocent. After a search operation that lasted several hours, students were safely evacuated and moved to the fitness center.


The injured were taken to Rhode Island Hospital, with one in critical condition and the others in stable condition, according to hospital authorities. The Barus & Holly building, where the shooting occurred, houses the engineering and physics departments, and exams were underway at the time. The incident has caused an outpouring of grief and concern throughout the Brown University community and the city of Providence.
