Mexico City (The Uttam Hindu): A tragic aviation accident shook central Mexico after a private jet crashed while attempting an emergency landing, killing at least seven people. The incident occurred in San Mateo Atenco, around 50 kilometers west of Mexico City and barely five kilometers from Toluca Airport, in an industrial zone.

According to Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrián Hernández, the aircraft had taken off from the Pacific coastal city of Acapulco. There were 10 people on board the jet, including eight passengers and two crew members. Several hours after the crash, authorities confirmed the recovery of seven bodies.

Preliminary reports indicate that the pilot tried to make an emergency landing on a football field but lost control of the aircraft. The jet then slammed into the roof of a nearby factory, triggering a massive fire that spread panic across the area.

San Mateo Atenco Mayor Ana Muñiz said that around 130 people were evacuated from nearby locations as a precaution due to the risk of fire and explosions. The aircraft involved was identified as a Cessna 650 Citation III with registration number XA-PRO, operated by Servicios Aeros Estrella.

Moments before the crash, the pilot had sent a distress message to air traffic control, reporting a rapid loss of altitude. Shortly after, a loud explosion was heard, and thick black smoke was visible from several kilometers away.

Emergency teams from Mexico City and Toluca rushed to the site. Firefighters battled intense flames for over two hours. Due to the presence of gas and fuel tanks in the area, four blocks were evacuated and two shops were temporarily shut down.

Officials noted that the workshop near the crash site was empty at the time, preventing further loss of life. Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
