No Military Alliance Against North Korea: Russia's Warning to US, South Korea and Japan
Seoul (The Uttam Hindu): Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has given a stern warning to the US, South Korea and Japan against forming a military alliance against North Korea. He made this statement during his meeting with Kim Jong Un in Wonsan city of North Korea on Saturday.
In this meeting, there was a discussion on furthering military and economic cooperation between Russia and North Korea. Lavrov also conveyed Russian President Vladimir Putin's message to Kim. On this occasion, Kim Jong Un said that his country would unconditionally support Russia in the Ukraine war.
Do not form a military alliance against North Korea…, Russia warns the US, South Korea and Japan: According to North Korea's state agency KCNA, Kim said that Pyongyang and Moscow share the same views on all major international issues, and the relationship has now reached an alliance-like level. Lavrov spoke of intensifying the strategic partnership between the two countries and joint activities on international forums.
In the past few years, relations between Russia and North Korea have become very close. According to reports, North Korea is providing arms and military help to Russia in the Ukraine war, while Russia is providing military and economic support to North Korea. This growing closeness has caused concern in the US, Japan and South Korea.
These countries fear that Russia can provide such technologies to North Korea, which can make its nuclear and missile program more dangerous. After talks with North Korean Foreign Minister Choi Son Hui, Lavrov said that the US, Japan and South Korea are increasing military pressure around North Korea, which is a danger signal.
He cautioned the three countries not to use their mutual partnership against Russia or North Korea. It is worth noting that the US, Japan and South Korea have recently intensified trilateral military exercises in response to North Korea's nuclear program.
On Friday, the three countries conducted joint air exercises near the Korean Peninsula, which also involved US nuclear-capable fighter jets. North Korea sees these exercises as preparations for a war against it and says it is being forced to develop nuclear weapons to counter the US threat.
Lavrov said that we understand North Korea's position on its nuclear programme, and its development is the result of the hard work of its scientists. The meeting took place in the city of Wonsan, where North Korea has recently opened a huge sea resort that can accommodate 20,000 people at a time.
