Speeding car rams Christmas crowd, 10 killed: Medical emergency suspected
Paris (The Uttam Hindu): Christmas celebration preparations in the Sainte-Anne area of Guadeloupe, an overseas territory of France, turned into chaos when a speeding car rammed into the crowd gathered there. 10 people have tragically died in this heart-wrenching accident, while many others are reported to be injured. The incident took place at Schoelcher Square, located in front of the town hall and church, where a large number of people were busy decorating and preparing for the Christmas event. This accident, which occurred amidst the festive joy, has plunged the entire area into mourning.
According to Radio Caraibes Internationale (RCI), a total of 19 people were affected in the accident, of whom 10 lost their lives. Three of the injured remain in critical condition and were immediately hospitalized. Immediately after the incident, firefighters, paramedics, and police officers responded and began rescue operations. The city's mayor also arrived at the scene upon receiving information. The administration has activated a special team to provide psychological and other support to the victims and their families.
The cause of the accident has yet to be officially confirmed, but eyewitnesses suggest the driver may have experienced a medical emergency while driving, causing the car to spin out of control. However, authorities are currently treating this as a mere possibility, and a detailed investigation is underway. It's worth noting that the driver who caused the accident did not flee the scene, but was present at the scene even after the incident. Police are questioning him to determine the true cause.
This incident has brought back memories of a similar tragedy that occurred in Germany last year. Just before Christmas, a car plowed into a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg, killing two people and injuring 68, many seriously. A 50-year-old Saudi doctor was arrested in connection with the incident. This latest accident in Guadeloupe has once again raised questions about safety and traffic management in crowded areas during the festive season.
