Thailand-Cambodia Conflict Enters Second Day As Clashes Escalate, 15 Dead and Counting
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A dangerous military confrontation between Thailand and Cambodia has brought both nations to the edge of war, as border clashes intensify. According to Thailand’s Health Ministry, 15 people have been killed so far—13 civilians and one soldier—while 46 others have sustained injuries. The violence marks the deadliest conflict along the shared border in the past decade.
The clashes were reportedly triggered on Wednesday by a landmine explosion that injured five Thai soldiers. The incident fueled further unrest, leading to widespread violence across the region.
Thailand has accused Cambodia of targeting civilians and even striking a hospital. Health Minister Somsak condemned the attacks, urging the Cambodian government to "immediately cease fire and return to the path of peace."
As the situation worsens, over 100,000 people have fled from the border areas seeking safety. The large-scale displacement has triggered international concern.
In response to the crisis, the United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Friday at the request of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. Meanwhile, global powers including the United States have called for an immediate de-escalation and restoration of peace in the region.
