Trump again signals intent to take control of Greenland, tensions rise for Russia and China
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): After taking oath as President of the United States on January 20, 2025, Donald Trump once again indicated his expansionist approach toward Greenland. Now, reinforcing his stance, Trump has appointed a special envoy for the Arctic island, clearly signaling renewed efforts to bring Greenland under US influence. The move has sparked strong reactions in Denmark and Greenland.
Trump stated that Greenland is critically important for America’s national security. He claimed that increasing naval activity by Russia and China around Greenland poses a potential threat to the US. Citing these concerns, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the Special Envoy for Greenland to oversee the mission.
Following this decision, Denmark and Greenland strongly criticized the US move. The Trump administration believes Greenland is rich in mineral resources and holds major strategic value. By increasing control over Greenland, the US aims to reduce its dependence on China for minerals and strengthen its strategic position against Russia, including plans to deploy a ballistic missile defense system.
Trump said, “We need Greenland not just for minerals, but for national security. The presence of Russian and Chinese ships there is a serious concern for America.” Reacting sharply, Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen said, “Greenland belongs to its people. No country can take control of it under the excuse of international security.”
Greenland has a population of around 57,000. It remained a Danish colony for many years and gained autonomous status in 2009, though it still relies heavily on financial support from Denmark. Located between Europe and North America, Greenland’s geographic position makes it highly significant in global politics and security. Its mineral wealth and strategic importance continue to fuel competition among the US, China, and Russia.
