KUALA LUMPUR (The Uttam Hindu): Southeast Asian diplomacy witnessed a historic moment on Sunday when Cambodia and Thailand signed a long-awaited peace agreement, formally ending years of border tensions and a military standoff in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The agreement was signed in the presence of US President Donald Trump. President Trump played a key role in brokering the agreement along with Malaysian Prime Minister and ASEAN Chairman Anwar Ibrahim. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signed the Cambodia-Thailand Peace Agreement at the signing ceremony in Kuala Lumpur. The agreement is considered a milestone for regional stability. The event was attended by senior diplomats, ASEAN representatives, and representatives of several major world powers.

President Trump presided over the peace signing ceremony. He emphasized the role of economic diplomacy in promoting peace. He announced that the United States had finalized two separate agreements alongside the peace agreement. These include a new trade agreement with Cambodia and a strategic mineral partnership with Thailand.

"As long as the two countries are at peace, we have a lot of dealings with them. When we make deals and we see two countries that we have a lot of trade with, we should use that trade to make sure they don't get embroiled in war," US President Trump said.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his gratitude to President Trump and said, "Any dispute, no matter how difficult or complex, should be resolved through peaceful means. This agreement marks a new chapter in bilateral relations between Phnom Penh and Bangkok." He also thanked Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for hosting the talks and guiding the negotiation process.
