London (The Uttam Hindu) : Amid rising tensions in West Asia and global concern over the Strait of Hormuz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has clarified that his government's focus is on the country's economic interests, energy security, and a diplomatic solution. He said he understands why people are concerned about rising inflation and everyday costs, and the government is already working on a "five-point plan" to address this.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has taken a major and tough decision. Prime Minister Starmer stated that Britain will not join the US and Israeli military campaign against Iran. He clearly stated that this is not our fight. His decision comes at a time when Britain is facing intense pressure from NATO allies to jump into this war. The Prime Minister made it clear that he will not allow the country's military to be part of any offensive operation that would harm Britain's national interests.

Trump's warning is just 'noise'

Starmer also responded to US President Donald Trump's warning of a possible exit from NATO. Calling it an "attempt to create pressure" and "noise", he said that NATO is the most effective military alliance ever and Britain is fully committed to it. He said, "No matter how much pressure or noise there is, I will take every decision with my national interest in mind." He also made it clear that Britain will not directly get involved in this conflict. "This is not our fight, and we will not get involved in it," he said, but added that it is important to maintain close ties with Europe for the defence, security and economic future.

Starmer also announced diplomatic initiatives on the Strait of Hormuz crisis. He stated that Britain will host a key meeting later this week with countries that wish to cooperate in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that Yvette Cooper will chair the meeting, which will discuss restoring freedom of navigation, ensuring the safety of stranded ships and sailors, and resuming the movement of essential goods. According to Starmer, Britain is already actively working on this front. The Foreign Minister and Chancellor have already spoken with their counterparts from the G7 countries, while the Defense Minister is in contact with partners in the Middle East. He stated that the UK has brought together 35 countries under a joint initiative to address maritime security in the Gulf region.

He stressed that “the most effective way to reduce the cost of living in the UK is to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East and reopen the Strait of Hormuz,” and that every possible diplomatic avenue would be pursued to achieve this.
