Washington (The Uttam Hindu): Tensions between the United States and China over Taiwan appear to be rising once again. The US administration under President Donald Trump has announced a major arms deal worth more than USD 10 billion to supply advanced weapons to Taiwan. The decision is being seen as a significant blow to Beijing and is expected to trigger a strong reaction from China.

The US State Department announced the weapons sale late Wednesday night, around the same time President Trump addressed the nation in a televised speech. According to the State Department, the sale aligns with America’s national, economic, and security interests. It said the deal would strengthen Taiwan’s defence capabilities and help maintain political stability, military balance, and economic growth in the region.

Under US law, Washington is committed to providing Taiwan with the means necessary for self-defence. This commitment has long been a key source of friction between the US and China. Beijing considers Taiwan a part of its territory and has repeatedly warned of using force if necessary. In recent years, China has also conducted large-scale military exercises around the island.

The arms package includes 82 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and 420 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS). These are the same weapons that were earlier supplied to Ukraine during the Biden administration for defence against Russia. The value of these systems is estimated to be over USD 4 billion. The deal also includes 60 self-propelled howitzer systems along with related military equipment, also valued at more than USD 4 billion.

In addition, the package features drones worth over USD 1 billion, military software exceeding USD 1 billion, Javelin and TOW missiles worth more than USD 700 million, helicopter spare parts valued at USD 96 million, and refurbishment kits for Harpoon missiles worth USD 91 million.
