WASHINGTON (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump has signed a landmark executive order on Iran, allowing the US to impose additional tariffs on countries that directly or indirectly purchase goods or services from Iran, the White House confirmed.

According to the White House, the order does not set a fixed tariff rate, but rather authorizes the administration to set and revise tariffs based on current and changing circumstances. The order also provides that the president may revise the order if the situation changes, retaliatory measures are taken, or Iran or the affected country takes concrete steps to cooperate with the United States on national security, foreign policy, or economic matters.

Under this executive order, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Commerce, and the US Trade Representative have been given the authority to implement the tariff system, set related rules, and issue necessary guidelines.

The White House clarified that this step has been taken against Iran's activities, which include efforts to acquire nuclear capability, support for terrorist organizations, ballistic missile program and spreading instability in the Middle East. The statement said that all these activities pose a serious threat to the security of America, its allies and regional partners. The US accused Iran of providing support to proxy groups and militias across the Middle East, including organizations that have been involved in harming Americans and targeting US forces and allies.

The White House accused the Iranian regime of serious mismanagement of resources, saying the government prioritized its nuclear and missile programs while neglecting infrastructure and the well-being of ordinary citizens. The statement said the Iranian people are facing a severe economic crisis, while the regime is suppressing human rights and brutally crushing protests.

The United States reiterated that Iran's policies pose a persistent and extraordinary threat to the United States, requiring strong and swift action to protect US citizens, allies, and national interests.
