Van crashes through barricades near White House, sparks major security scare
A van crashes through security barricades near the White House in Washington, triggering a major security scare.
Washington (The Uttam Hindu): A major security scare unfolded outside the White House on Wednesday morning when a van broke through security barricades and entered the restricted area. The daring incident shocked US security agencies, especially as the country remains on high alert amid tensions with Iran. The United States Secret Service and local police responded swiftly and detained the van’s driver on the spot. Notably, US President Donald Trump was present inside the White House at the time of the incident.
Incident near Lafayette Park early morning
According to the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, the incident occurred at around 6:37 am. Security personnel received reports that a suspicious van had smashed through a reinforced security barricade at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and H Street (Northwest). The location lies near the north-west corner of Lafayette Square, close to the Executive Mansion.
Considering the seriousness of the breach, police and Secret Service vehicles immediately surrounded the area and sealed off all nearby roads.
Traffic chaos as city roads sealed
The sudden security lockdown caused heavy traffic congestion on Washington’s roads. During the busy morning hours, many office-goers faced significant delays. However, no injuries have been reported in the incident. President Trump remained safe inside the White House, and according to reports, his scheduled visits to Ohio and Kentucky later in the day were expected to proceed as planned.
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, security has been further tightened at American checkpoints and sensitive locations across the country.
Attack or accident? Secret Service probing motive
Investigators have not yet disclosed the identity of the detained driver or the motive behind the incident. The Secret Service is conducting a detailed probe to determine whether the barricade breach was part of a larger security threat or merely an accident. Police interrogation of the suspect is ongoing.
Previous intrusion attempt at Mar-a-Lago
This is not the first breach involving a property linked to the US president. In February this year, an intrusion attempt took place at Mar-a-Lago, a resort associated with Donald Trump. During that incident, a 21-year-old man identified as Austin Tucker Martin attempted to enter the premises with weapons. He was killed in police firing, and authorities recovered a shotgun and a fuel can from him.
The latest incident has once again raised serious questions about security arrangements around the US president.
