Ashoka University Professor Detained After Posting Controversial Remarks on Operation Sindoor

Sonepat (The Uttam Hindu): Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science at Ashoka University, Ali Khan Mahmudabad, has been taken into police custody for his comments on social media regarding India's military operation, "Operation Sindoor," targeting terrorist groups in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy began when Mahmudabad made remarks on social media about the media briefing conducted by women officers, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, during Operation Sindoor. He referred to the briefing as "optics" and "just hypocrisy". The Haryana State Commission for Women took suo motu cognizance of his comments, stating that they undermined women officers in the Indian armed forces and promoted communal discord.
Mahmudabad's Statement
In response to the summons, Mahmudabad clarified that his comments were not misogynistic and were being misinterpreted. He stated, "The screenshots attached to the notice make it clear that my remarks have been completely misunderstood and that the Commission has no jurisdiction whatsoever in the matter." He further added that his comments were about safeguarding the lives of both citizens and soldiers, and there was nothing remotely misogynistic about them.
Key Points of Mahmudabad's Comments
1. Appreciation for Diversity: Mahmudabad appreciated the choice of Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh for the press conference, representing India's diversity.
2. Concern for Indian Muslims: He invited right-wing commentators who supported Colonel Qureshi to also demand protection for common Indian Muslims facing demonization and persecution.
3. Not Anti-Women: Mahmudabad maintained that his comments were not anti-women and were meant to promote diversity and inclusiveness.
Reaction from Authorities and University
The Haryana State Commission for Women viewed Mahmudabad's comments as an attempt to vilify national military actions. Ashoka University stated that they are cooperating with the police and local authorities in the investigation, while clarifying that Mahmudabad's comments were made in his individual capacity and do not represent the university's opinion.
Mahmudabad was arrested from Delhi based on a complaint by a BJP Yuva Morcha leader. The police confirmed the arrest and the investigation is ongoing.
